Chemicals get the attention. Equipment does the work. A pool with perfect chemistry and a choked filter will still be cloudy, and a pump that fails in May is the most expensive event in a pool owner's year.
Filter pressure is your dashboard
Note the pressure gauge reading when the filter is clean — that is your baseline. When pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above it, flow has dropped enough to matter and it is time to backwash. That is the rule. Backwashing on a calendar instead wastes water and chemicals, or leaves you running a blocked filter for days.
After backwashing, always rinse before returning to filter mode, and note the new baseline. If the clean baseline itself keeps climbing over months, the media is spent — sand typically lasts three to five years, cartridges far less.
Circulation hours
The whole volume should turn over at least once a day; in Delhi NCR summer, aim higher. Practically, that is 8 to 10 hours for most residential pools, and it should include the hottest part of the day when sanitiser demand peaks. Cutting to three hours to save electricity is the most expensive saving in pool ownership.
Pump warning signs
- Loss of prime or air in the basket — a suction-side leak or a failing lid seal
- Rising motor noise or a growl — bearing wear, weeks or months from failure
- Water dripping under the motor — shaft seal failure; fix now or replace the motor later
- Motor tripping thermally — restricted flow, low voltage, or blocked ventilation
Baskets and seals
Skimmer and pump baskets should be emptied before they fill, not after. A full basket starves the pump, which raises motor temperature and shortens bearing life. Lid O-rings need lubricating; a dry O-ring is the top cause of air leaks.
