The biggest misconception in pool ownership: that a saltwater pool is chlorine-free. It is not. A salt chlorinator simply generates chlorine on site by electrolysing dissolved salt. Both pools are sanitised by chlorine — one buys it, the other makes it.
What genuinely differs
Feel and comfort. Salt pools run at low, steady chlorine levels, so water feels softer and eyes and skin are less irritated. This is real and it is the main reason owners choose salt.
Dosing consistency. A chlorinator produces continuously, avoiding the peaks and troughs of manual dosing. Fewer chloramines, less smell.
Ongoing cost. Salt is far cheaper than packaged chlorine, but the cell is a consumable — typically three to seven years — and replacement is a significant expense. Electricity consumption is also higher.
Corrosion. Salt water is aggressive to metal fittings, ladders, light housings, natural stone coping and some grouting. In Indian conditions, with hard fill water on top, this needs designing for, not discovering.
Indian-specific realities
Hard borewell water plus a salt system means calcium scale forms on the chlorinator cell itself, cutting output. Cells need periodic acid cleaning, and hardness must be actively managed. Voltage fluctuation is the other local hazard — chlorinator electronics need proper protection.
Maintenance is not lower, it is different
Salt pools still require pH control (electrolysis pushes pH up steadily), alkalinity balance, stabiliser management, filtration and brushing. What you stop doing is handling chlorine drums. What you start doing is monitoring salt level, cell condition and scaling.
Which should you choose?
- Salt suits family pools in frequent use where swimmer comfort is the priority and the shell, coping and fittings are salt-appropriate.
- Traditional chlorine suits event and low-frequency-use pools, pools with sensitive stone or metal finishes, and anyone who wants lower upfront cost and simpler equipment.
