The four cost buckets
- Labour and visits — how many visits per month, and how long each one is.
- Chemicals — chlorine, pH corrector, alkalinity buffer, algaecide, clarifier. Ask whether these are included or billed on top.
- Consumables and equipment care — filter media, backwashing, cartridge cleaning, seals and gaskets.
- Reporting and accountability — whether you receive documented readings after every visit.
Cheap quotes almost always drop buckets 2 and 4. You then pay for chemicals at retail and have no record of what went into your water.

Where the real money goes

Comparing two quotes fairly
Put both proposals side by side and ask: how many visits, are chemicals included, is water testing documented, who pays for emergency call-outs, and what is the response time when something breaks. A plan that answers all five is usually cheaper over twelve months than the one with the lower headline number.
